Preformed ponds or pond liner?

I thought I could build an eleborate garden water feature using preformed ponds connected together with a river course and water pump then I’d blog about my progress here. My first hurdle was making the decision whether to use preformed ponds at all, or go with the butyl pond liner option instead. There seemed to be advantages and disadvantages to both, particularly with an interlocking small pond system such as I wanted to design and install in my sloping garden.

Availability had a lot to do with it. If I couldn’t find the designs I had in mind for my cascade of little pools in a reasonably priced garden centre with lots of preformed ponds for sale, then I would have to go with a large sheet of butyl cut to fit. To be honest, the amount of time I spend researching all my options, trying to track down the perfect pond moulding and agonising over the decision making process meant that by the time I had nearly made my mind up, the best part of the summer was over so I ended up postponing the whole project until next year and determined to apply myself to writing a blog about it instead.
